Western Health has developed an African Women’s Wellness Program for maternity care at Sunshine Hospital.
The aim of the program is to:
provide accessible and culturally appropriate clinical services
provide education for African women
provide resources for African women
support women who are affected by Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting also known as circumcision
support health professionals involved in the care of African women.
For African women the Program offers:
Women centred care, that is specialised care that is centred around the woman and her individual needs, taking into account her cultural needs
Culturally appropriate information and education resources
Support for women as they journey through the maternity health system
For health professionals and the wider community the Program offers:
Culturally appropriate information and education
Bi monthly collaboration meetings with community agencies and Western Health
Collaboration and resource sharing among community based organizations, service providers and health care professionals within the multi-disciplinary team
Partnering with GP’s for improved referral pathways
Ongoing education for all health professionals
Clinical practice guidelines
