Theatre Becomes Art At Footscray Hospital

Theatre of Art

For decades Dr Robert Smith, a former anaesthetist, spent his working days with patients' lives in his hands. As an anaesthetist, he had an incredible view and perspective into life and death surgery, which he has captured in a collection of paintings and drawings.

The collection, Theatre of Art: 30 years of paintings and drawings at Western Health, will feature in an upcoming exhibition at the Melbourne Fine Art Gallery next month. Amongst the works are approximately 40 pieces including paintings and sketches showcasing surgeons, patients and operations undertaken at Western Health. Each artwork offers a unique insight into a fascinating side of surgery.

Entry to the exhibition is free. Artworks are available for purchase during the exhibition with all proceeds donated to the Western Health Foundation to support patient care and research.
