Referral guidelines

Signs and symptoms

Please also include, if relevant:

  • Relevant past medical history. E.g.: cancer, smoking, COPD, occupational exposure

  • Symptoms or signs suggestive of metastasis from a lung cancer

Tests

  • Chest X-ray

  • Contrast spiral CT of the chest and upper abdomen

Request patients bring their films/disk to their outpatient appointment. If images are not available, please include results with referral.

Inclusion criteriaAny patient with symptoms indicating a suspicion of lung cancer.
Exclusion criteria

Patients with other (non-cancer like) lung or respiratory symptoms may be appropriate for the respiratory or thoracic surgery clinics.

Red flags – Refer directly to ED if:
 
  • Moderate or severe haemoptysis 

  • Stridor

  • Respiratory distress

  • Symptoms of superior vena cava obstruction.

How to refer

MBS patients are bulk billed. Referrals need to be to the named Head of Unit.
