Sina turns trauma into triumph
Sina Portelli always puts others first.
Despite battling cancer on not one but three occasions – the first time over 15 years ago when she had a cervical tumour removed, in 2005 when she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in her left breast and again in 2012 when another lump was removed from the same breast – Sina is determined to help fellow cancer sufferers.
Sina underwent a mastectomy and reconstruction after her first breast cancer diagnosis, leaving only a small chance that the cancer would return.
Unfortunately it did.
The bubbly Burnside Heights mother underwent radiotherapy and is now on hormone tablets to overcome her third bout of cancer.
Throughout her recovery, Sina has also turned her hand to fundraising to help other women of the west who have been diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
Late last year, Sina held a fundraising evening, raising an amazing $18,700 for BreastWest.
The money raised by Sina was recently used to purchase a new portable ultrasound machine, which will help diagnosis breast cancer for women in the west.
“It’s good to show people that having cancer is not the end of the world,” Sina said.
“You can’t give up. You get days where you feel down, but you can’t give up.
“I’m really, really happy that I raised that money to help get the machine.”
Sina plans to hold another fundraiser for BreastWest on 25 October this year. You can join her event by purchasing tickets here: www.ticketebo.com.au/sina
