Joan Kirner Women and Children’s (JKWC) at Sunshine Hospital has retained its prestigious Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accreditation for the eighth time running.
For the past 25 years Sunshine Hospital has held the BFHI accreditation, recognising our world-class breastfeeding support.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF accreditation program aims to create an environment where breastfeeding is protected, promoted and supported.
The program helps families receive unbiased information, appropriate support and factual advice before, during and after the birth of their baby.
We are proud to be one of only two maternity services in metropolitan Melbourne recognised by the BFHI’s rigorous assessment process.
‘This accreditation is a testament to the ongoing commitment and dedication of our lactation team, as well as our midwives, nurses, and medical teams across Women’s and Children’s,’ Deputy Executive Director, Nursing and Midwifery and Director, Maternity Strategy Adjunct Professor Tanya Farrell said.
‘It also recognises that women and their families are well supported, and babies can have the best start in life.’
To earn this accreditation, maternity services must meet strict standards that ensure families receive consistent, evidence-based infant feeding support.
BFHI accreditation occurs every three years, ensuring ongoing quality improvement and independent review.
It also provides us with a valuable opportunity to hear from consumers about their care experience. This helps us celebrate what we do well and identify areas for growth.
The BFHI is managed by the Australian College of Midwives in Australia.
