Hood of hope for COVID-19 patients

A personal ventilation hood to help contain the droplet spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in intensive care units has been designed by Western Health intensive care physician, Associate Professor Forbes McGain and University of Melbourne researchers.

The device has been prototyped and tested with a team of fluid dynamics researchers, in consultation with intensive care specialists, nurses and other infectious disease experts here at Western Health.

Patient trials are due to start in the coming months with much interest from other hospitals hoping to secure the hoods.

Western Health Chief Executive Russell Harrison has commended the team for working in partnership to create a device to help protect healthcare staff working on the frontline.
