We are delighted to advise that Western Health and North West Academic Centre have established a Biostatistical Consulting Service for Western Health clinical staff. Staff employed by Western Health at any campuses of Western Health is now eligible to access biostatistical consulting services at no cost for an initial consultation. This new service is headed by Professor Danny Liew, director of the Melbourne EpiCentre and commenced on 5 February 2013.
We are pleased to be able to provide biostatistical support to the staff of Western Health, as part of the mutual benefits of our co-location within the Western Centre for Health Research and Education at Sunshine Hospital.
The Biostatistical Consulting Service provides statistical support for research projects within Western Health. Advice can be provided on:
Study design and conduct (including sample size and power calculations)
Analysis of data
If you are seeking advice/consultation prior to ethics submission, please provide the biostatistician with a draft protocol when making an appointment.
If you are seeking advice after data collection, please provide evidence of ethics approval to the biostatistician when making an appointment.
Dr Koen Simons has recently arrived in Melbourne from Belgium and brings with him a wealth of expertise in biostats in a number of healthcare applications. We are certain that his expertise and knowledge will further enrich and inform our research projects.

Dr Simon's time at WH is funding by the WH Office for Research and will be providing support to WH initiated research involving WH staff. Further biostatistical support on Mondays and Tuesdays is also provided through Sara Vogrin from the Melbourne Medical School, Western Precinct, The University of Melbourne for any projects or departments falling under the auspices of the Department of Medicine in WH. Dr Simons and Sara will share the same contact number and office during their assigned days at Sunshine.
A single license SPSS on one of the shared PCs at the Office for Research (Level 3, WCHRE Sunshine Hospital) is available for staff usage.
