Children who live in Brimbank, Hobson’s Bay, Maribyrnong or Wyndham can be referred to Community Outpatients for the following assessments:
A Multidisciplinary Screening Assessment where there are developmental concerns and where Autism Spectrum Disorder is unlikely. This assessment is usually completed by two staff from the disciplines of Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
An Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment if Autism is of concern. This assessment is usually completed by two-three clinicians through a combination of a Paediatrician, Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist or a Neuropsychologist as relevant to the assessment needs of the child.
Referring health professionals please note: where there are concerns about an Autism Spectrum Disorder, these must be discussed with the family prior to making a referral. Children must have had a recent Paediatrician assessment prior to being given an Autism assessment appointment.
After the various assessments, there are a number of options which the therapists and the families can work through together. These include:
Offering short term therapy through the Children’s Allied Health Service
Referral to other specialised and general community services
Help with accessing specific programs available
Liaising with other services involved in the child’s care and strategies for families to help with the child’s development
