All Western Health hospitals became Smoke Free on Wednesday the 1st July 2009.

Western Health has joined hospitals across Victoria in an effort to become smoke free. Western Health aims to educate the community about health related issues and being Smoke Free is an example of our commitment to improving the health of the West.

Smoking is prohibited on the grounds of Western Health hospitals including buildings and vehicles.

As the major public health care organisation in the West, Western Health is committed to the health and wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff.

Western Health has provided free nicotine replacement therapy and counselling to all patients who require it during their stay.

"Western Health is not forcing anyone to quit smoking. Rather, the smoke free initiative is a tangible way we can provide a healthier, cleaner and safer environment on Western Health premises." Western Health Acting Chief Executive, Silvio Pontonio said.

"Tobacco causes many of the cancers that are treated at Western Health. Quitting smoking is beneficial to the overall health of our community."

"We are communicating our Smoke Free policy to all staff, patients and visitors through signs and posters that clearly indicate that smoking is not permitted." Sarah Nichols, Western Health's Smoke Free Project Co-ordinator, said.

As part of its People and Culture strategy Western Health is committed to ensuring that people enjoy a safe, caring, friendly and healthy environment.
