Referring to Outpatients
Expert Tips for Referring to Western Health Outpatients
Western Health offers a comprehensive outpatient service to
referring general practitioners and people of the west. Because referrals are triaged by medical and/or nursing staff, all efforts
are made to arrange appointments based on the urgency and
need. If the triage staff are supplied with the relevant clinical
and demographic information, allocating appointments for
patients is faster and more likely to suit their needs.
When referring
We strongly recommend that GP's use the Western Health
Outpatient Referral Form. We have a paper version, and a
Medical Director version. (For the paper version, please
As most of your referrals will be faxed, please ensure that any handwriting will be legible and able to withstand the faxing
process

When writing your referral, please try to supply as much
relevant and contextual information as possible. The
registrar or consultant who triages your referral relies on his
information alone to assess your referral for urgency and the
most appropriate clinic. For example, a referral to Sleep
Disorders Clinic with "?sleep apnoea ...please assess" is
more likely to be given an appointment after a referral which includes "45 year old truck driver with increasing daytime somnolence and observed nocturnal apnoeas".
Interpreting services are provided free of charge to public outpatients within the hospital. If you think your patient will
need an interpreter, please request an interpreter from the language required when the referral is made.
