We have the following projects available to an interested MD Student from the University of Melbourne.
If you are interested please email Prof Anne-Maree Kelly at [email protected]
Supervisors: Prof Anne-Maree Kelly, Dr Andy Tagg
Location: Emergency Department, Sunshine Hospital.
Description: Knowing how much a child weighs is critical to accurate drug doses and equipment size in emergencies. The hands on project in the Emergency Department of Sunshine Hospital will weigh children and collect basic data about health status and ethnicity to see how accurate the commonly used formulae and other methods for estimating children’s weight are. It involves interacting with children and their parents and being embedded in a busy emergency department. It also builds on work of a previous MDRP student Kevin Nguyen who undertook a similar project in 2005-6. We suspect children have gotten fatter and that the methods have become increasingly inaccurate but your data will tell us! We would expect this work to result in at least one publication.
