Special Care Nursery

Welcome to the Special Care Nursery

The Special Care Nursery at Sunshine Hospital is a 15 bed high dependency level II unit with approximately 650 neonatal admissions per year.

Infants greater than 32 weeks gestation are admitted to the nursery from Maternity, Birthing Suites, Theatre and the Emergency Department. Neonates are also transferred in from other hospitals in Victoria and we have some are also admitted for surgery.

Various levels of care are provided including:

  • Advanced resuscitation and stabilisation of babies
  • Use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for respiratory distress
  • Establishment of oral feeding in premature infants
  • Phototherapy for neonatal jaundice
  • Intravenous antibiotic therapy
  • Observation and management of babies born to chemically dependant mothers
  • Comfort care for families program
  • Hospital in the home program

Education is also provided to Medical Students, Medical staff, Nursing Students, Graduate Nurses and Graduate Midwives.
