Emergency Medicine at Western Health services in emergency medicine via three Emergency Departments located at Western Hospital, Footscray, Sunshine Hospital and The Williamstown Hospital.
Emergency medicine is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and management of acute illness and injury affecting patients of all ages, including episodic undifferentiated physical and behavioural disorders. Emergency medicine provides an important interface with pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency medical services.
The emergency departments are located at Sunshine Hospital, The Williamstown Hospital and Western Hospital. The Emergency Departments see over 110,000 patients per year and experience a growth of 3.4% per annum.
The Service provides assessment, investigations and treatment to patients who present for urgent and emergency care. A multidisciplinary care coordination team provides discharge risk screening and referral to the community ensuring supports are in place for safe discharge home from the Emergency Department. The Short Stay Units at Sunshine and Footscray provide extended emergency management for patients requiring short-term observation and treatment up to 24 hours.
The division is committed to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research actively recruiting to training positions and postgraduate courses in medicine and nursing.
