Why is Western CHRE being built?
In order to effectively meet the needs of its residents, Western Health is transforming Sunshine Hospital into a major tertiary hospital. This $51.6 million development will position Western Health as a major provider of training and research opportunities for current and future health care professionals. By fostering an exchange of ideas and expertise between some of Melbourne's best health care professionals, the West will become known as an area of excellence in academic and research fields.
When will the centre be completed?
Construction of the new building commenced in early 2009 and is on schedule for completion in 2011. In 2011, staff and students will begin to make use of the modern facilities, which include a library, lecture theatre, auditorium and clinical skills spaces.
What will the Western CHRE provide?
In state-of-the-art facilities, the Western CHRE will provide unprecedented opportunities for current and future health care professionals.
The University of Melbourne's Western Clinical School will have a major presence at Sunshine Hospital to provide training for undergraduate and postgraduate doctors. Victoria University will also establish a centre for the education and training of nurses and allied health professionals.
The new centre will house researchers from both universities as well as Western Health staff. These researchers will investigate diseases that particularly affect people in the West, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis.
Has the development taken into account the expected increase in population in the western suburbs?
Western Health recognises that the West faces significant demographic challenges in the coming years, and long-term planning is necessary to ensure we can effectively care for our communities. By investing in the training of current and future health care professionals, as well as encouraging local medical research, we can provide local residents with better care and make a lasting contribution to our social fabric.
