At Western Health there are a number of career development programs and initiatives available for a variety of professions including:
Nursing and Midwifery:
Graduate Nurse Program (GNP) - The Graduate Nurse Program (GNP) aims to facilitate the transition from a novice nurse practitioner to a confident, competent registered nurse.
Graduate Midwife Program - Western Health's Graduate Midwife Program aims to be stimulating, rewarding and a positive consolidation of practice as a professional Registered Midwife.
Combined Graduate Program - Our combined graduate nurse and midwife program will provide the newly registered nurse/midwife with dynamic learning opportunities to consolidate their undergraduate general nursing and midwifery knowledge. The program offers a comprehensive orientation to both general nursing and midwifery health services. The graduate will be supported by the experienced preceptors in the ward area as well as graduate nurse/midwife specific educators.
Nurse Discovery Program - The Discovery Program is a 6 month comprehensive professional development program aimed at supporting the Registered Nurse in the transition to working within the specialty areas.
Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialists - At Western Health Registered Nurses/Midwives who meet specific criteria are encouraged to apply for advancement to the classification of Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) / Clinical Midwife Specialist (CMS).
Medical:
Medical Interns - We have a dedicated team within Medical Education and the Medical Workforce Unit who will work in conjunction with appropriate supervisors and leading health professionals to ensure that the education needs of our Medical Interns are met. Senior Staff and Supervisors provide continuing support and mid and end of term feedback occurs for all interns in all units. The Intern education program includes weekly intern education sessions, incorporating simulation workshops and case-based education scenarios.
Hospital Medical Officers and Registrars - We offer clinical rotations tailored to the individual as well as a range of excellent training programs across all specialties. Junior Medical Officers have the opportunity to rotate through all three hospitals as well as external rotations (please refer to the Medical Career Opportunities page for more information regarding rotations). The HMO education program comprises weekly education sessions, incorporating simulation workshops and case based education scenarios.

Allied Health:
Multidisciplinary Education Program - Open to all Allied Health employees employed at Western Health, this program has been designed to meet the ongoing training needs of allied health clinicians. The program has been designed to be consistent with the Mission, Values and Strategic Themes of Western Health and is run in conjunction with the other discipline specific professional development activities.
Pharmacy:
Pharmacy Intern Program - Involves interns being rotated through key areas of the department, including Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown Hospitals. At the beginning of the year, an intensive clinical and manufacturing training week is conducted in preparation for their three to four week rotations.
