Western Health has Intensive Care Units at Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals, staffed by 10 Intensivists who are all Fellows of the CICM. Footscray Hospital ICU provides care for approximately 800 critically ill adults each year. Footscray ICU is funded for 8 ICU equivalent beds and provides care for up to fourteen ICU/HDU patients at any time. The new, purpose built ICU at Sunshine Hospital opened in March 2015, and provides care for approximately 700 patients per year. It is funded for 8 ICU equivalent beds and provides care for up to 13 intensive care and high dependency patients at any time. Both units are accredited by the CICM for General Training (post-2014 training system) and C12 (pre-2014 training system) as well as by ACEM, RACP and ANZCA (Footscray ICU, expected for SH ICU this year). Western Health has 2 Emergency Departments, 4 Theatre Complexes, Cardiac Catheter Laboratories & over 600 acute inpatient beds across the network. Western Health provides care to one of the most culturally diverse & rapidly growing metropolitan regions of Australia. The Western Clinical School & the North West Academic Centre of the University of Melbourne are based at Sunshine Hospital, and we are also affiliated with Notre Dame University.
Our registrars gain a wide range of experience in adult intensive care medicine in a supportive and collaborative environment. Our casemix includes a variety of emergency and elective surgical and medical admissions including an increasing amount of obstetric medicine at Sunshine Hospital (which currently delivers around 5,500 babies per year). Our patients are relatively young with a high severity of illness compared with other metropolitan ICUs. All surgical services (with the exception of Cardiac Surgery and cranial Neurosurgery) are represented at Western Health’s ICUs. In addition to all standard ICU therapies, each ICU has a dedicated fibreoptic bronchoscope and an ultrasound machine with echo capability. Several of our Intensivists have postgraduate echocardiography & ultrasound qualifications & the opportunity exists for trainees to learn these skills via formal weekly teaching sessions as well as at the bedside.
A specifically designed registrar teaching program is run by our team of Intensivists. Our protected weekly teaching program is multidisciplinary and interactive, frequently including simulation at the state of the art simulation centre at Sunshine Hospital. Registrars are encouraged to attend other weekly educational activities including Mortality & Morbidity Audits, Journal Club, echocardiography teaching, and consultant led infectious disease/ ICU meetings. Western Health also runs the BASIC course, and registrars have the opportunity to attend WH and external VICEN days.
The Department of Intensive Care is actively involved in research. We are a member of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group, with several dedicated research coordinators and a research program including large ANZICS trials as well as local studies. Trainees are encouraged to participate in research, and the opportunity exists to complete your formal project under the supervision of experienced and enthusiastic Intensivists.
The department has the following positions available in 2017: ICU/Anaesthetics Registrar – 2 x positionsThese positions involve 6 months as an ICU registrar and 6 months as an Anaesthetic registrar each year, and would ideally suit CICM advanced trainees seeking 12 months anaesthetics and 12 months ICU over a 2 year period.
