Western Health is a high volume tertiary service in the inner western suburbs of Melbourne at Footscray and Sunshine Hospitals. The Western Health Cardiology Department provides services targeted at the diagnosis, interventional and treatment of patients who are affected by cardiovascular disease. Western Health Cardiology inpatient services are provided across both campuses - Western and Sunshine Hospitals; outpatient clinics are provided at both also. We perform over 700 PCIs per year and have a busy acute STEMI service linked with MICA and perform over 200 primary PCI per year.
Western Health Cardiology has a major focus on teaching, training and research. Registrars and Fellows are expected to be actively engaged in a research project and teaching. The department is involved in a number of international multicentre randomised trials as well as independent investigator initiated research projects.The Western Health Cardiology Unit is serviced by over 20 VMO Cardiologists, 2 Fellows, 4 Registrars and 4 HMOs. The Registrars comprise of 4 Accredited Cardiology Advanced Trainees.
The department has the following positions available for the year 2017:
Registrar - 4 x Accredited Advanced Cardiology Trainee position

Two (2) Fellowship positions suited to trainees who will have completed their advanced training in cardiology.
Fellow - 1 x Interventional Cardiology Fellowship (The Yean L. Lim Interventional Cardiology Fellowship) position
Successful applicant for this position will be eligible for training in percutaneous coronary interventions in accordance with CSANZ guidelines. The Trainee will have completed core advanced FRACP training in Cardiology or its equivalent, and have completed training in Diagnostic Catheterisation in accordance with CSANZ guidelines. Applicants must be eligible for appropriate registration with AHPRA. The position is a fulltime fellowship of 12 month duration dedicated to procedural interventional cardiology training and research in the field of interventional cardiology.
The Fellowship was established in recognition of the significant contribution made by Professor Yean L. Lim AM to the development of Interventional Cardiology in Australia and particularly Melbourne Metropolitan West. The position offered is a full time Fellowship for 12 month duration dedicated to procedural interventional cardiology training and research in the field of interventional cardiology. Trainees will be involved in complex cases including chronic total occlusions, bifurcation lesions and multi-vessel intervention. Trainees will be required to make a significant contribution to the pre-procedure assessment and post operative patient care. They will be responsible for managing appropriate work up of all patients likely to undergo PCI and manage cath lab scheduling to improve lab efficiency. They will be involved in the on call STEMI roster after hours and on weekend and attended interventional cardiology clinic. They will be responsible for assisting with regular audit of procedural outcomes and mortality and morbidity reviews. The Fellow will conduct an independent research project and be involved in ongoing research activities within the unit. Candidates interested in obtaining a postgraduate degree through University of Melbourne can be facilitated.
Fellow - 1 x Cardiac Imaging Fellowship position
Successful applicant for this position will be recognised as a subspecialist in echocardiography and eligible to apply for Level A accreditation (and possibly Level B) with the Conjoint Cardiac CT Committee. Applicants will have completed core advanced FRACP training in Cardiology or its equivalent. Applicants must be eligible for appropriate registration with AHPRA. The position is a fulltime fellowship of 12 month duration dedicated to echocardiography and cardiac CT training and research. There will be opportunity for limited cardiac MRI experience. Successful applicant will gain extensive hand-on experience in echocardiography, TOE, 3D echo, stress echo and cardiac CT. The fellow will be required to make a significant contribution to the pre-study assessment and post study care of stress echo and TOE. The fellow will also be responsible for all inpatient and outpatient cardiac CT patients. In addition, on call roster participation may be required. The fellow will be responsible in maintaining the database of echocardiography and cardiac CT, and assisting with regular audit of cardiac imaging. The Fellow will conduct independent research projects and be involved in ongoing research education and training activities within the unit.
