Appointees rotate through the Emergency Departments  at Western and Sunshine Hospitals.


Western Hospital is a 323-bed adult medicine teaching hospital.  The Department of Emergency Medicine has an annual census of 32,000 adult patients with a high level of acuity (admission rate is approximately 30%).  The Department holds a two (2) year accreditation from the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine for Advanced Training.

Sunshine Hospital is a 200-bed adult and paediatric hospital with an annual census of over 60,000 patients per year including approximately 23,000 paediatric attendences.  The Department currently holds accreditation for advanced training in adult and paediatric emergency medicine from the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and the Royal Australian College of Physicians.

With a combined census of over 90,000 patients in the last 12 months and high quality clinical, education and research infrastructure, Western Hospital and Sunshine Hospital together offer an integrated and diverse training opportunity to emergency medicine trainees.There is a vigorous research program with a strong publication record that is based in the new Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.

The Emergency Department has four hours of protected teaching time weekly which includes a structured program for Primary and Fellowship Candidates.  There is a culture for teaching and research with proven success in Exams and Research Projects - the department boast excellent results at both Primary and Fellowship examinations of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. 

The Emergency Department has the following number of positions employed :

Registrar - Western Hospital (Footscray)       :      12 x positions
Registrar - Sunshine Hospital (St Albans)      :      15 x positions
  

During the 12 month appointment as a Registrar in Emergency Medicine, terms may be available in the following areas:  

- Medicine
- Intensive Care 
- Anaesthetics
- Paediatric Emergency Medicine
- Trauma
 - Retrievals (ARV)


Prior negotiation with the Selection Panel Members will need to be undertaken and agreed to before confirmation of employment contract.
