Addiction Medicine

Description

The Addiction Medicine Service (Western Health) provides comprehensive medical care for patients with a wide range of drug related disorders and receives referrals statewide.  This full time position offers accredited training in Addiction Medicine at Western Hospital and could also be considered by other medical trainees for relevant clinical experience.

Description

Description

Endocrinology
Description

The Department of Endocrinology is a busy subspecialty unit of Western Health serving 6,000 outpatients per year and also having inpatients and a busy Consultation service at both Footscray and Sunshine campuses. 

The Department has the following positions available in 2011.

Registrar Endocrinology Advanced Trainee - 1x position available required clinical year (RCY) training position,
                                                                                    Western Health.

Advanced Training Registrar - Endocrinology - 1 x position is available.  It is based at Western Health and

Gastroenterology
Description

The Gastroenterology Unit is part of the Centre of Oncology and Gastroenterology Service (COGS).  The Unit is staffed by 3 Registrars, one of whom is a Fellow  - this position would suit a candidate near the end of their training who wishes to get advanced training in endoscopy or hepatology.  The position is suitable for a non core year for an Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology.

General Medicine
Description

The General Internal Medicine Unit at Western Hospital, Footscray admits about 2,400 patients a year, has two outpatient clinics a week.
 
The department has the following positions available for the period of 12 months in 2011 commencing 7th February.

Registrar - General Medicine Advanced Trainee - 2 x position 

(There is a possibility for rotations (6 mths each) in areas such as Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine.) Other areas of speciality are also being explored currently as a possible rotation (ie. Infectious Diseases)

Applications are invited for 6 positions - 2 positions to be provided at each site across the 3 health care networks - for 1-3 years of advanced training in General Medicine  

Successful applicants will be provided with experience necessary to satisfy RACP advanced training rquirements in General Medicine with opportunities for rotations which may include:

Respiratory Medicine
Cardiology (Metro)
Cardiology (Rural)
Trauma Medicine
Perioperative Medicine
Emergency Department Acute Medicine
Intensive Care

Applicants for >1 year of training will have the opportunity to arrange rotations in their 2nd/3rd Year of training that compliment those already gained.  Applicants who have completed core training in another subspecialty will be provided with 12 months of General Medical Training with the possibility of an additional 12 months as a junior consultant post-fellowship in order to achieve the highly regarded dual training in General Medicine and other subspecialty.

Infectious Diseases
Description

The Infectious Diseases Unit provides an excellent clinical experience under the supervsion of 3 supportive full time Staff Physicians.  This includes inpatient care, an extensive consultation service, outpatients (Tuberculosis, Hepatitis and general Infectious Disease), Infection Control, Hospital in the Home, and an antibiotic stewardship program.  The successful candidate will gain knowledge in the management of adult community-acquired, nosocomial, mycobacterial, tropical and retroviral infections in particular.  There is a major commitment to teaching of students and basic trainees and active encouragement to participate in clinical meetings.

The department has the following positions available in 2011:

Registrars - Advanced trainee 1 position RACP accredited

  • The selection process will be in two parts - First Round : to be held in early August (match expected to occur on 12th August, closing date for the 1st match probably 30th July) and will be open to all current ID trainees (ie those who have received or are eligible to receive, RACP ID SAC accreditation for at least one year of training in 2010). 
    Please see college website to confirm dates and closing date for the first match.
                                                                                - Second Round : to be held in mid/late August after release of the clinical examination results and will be open to all potential new entrants as well as individuals unmatched in the first round.

  • The 2nd Round will be open to all first year applicants and any remaining applicants from the first round.

Infectious Diseases Registrar (3914) Position Now Closed

Intensive Care
Description

The Western Health Intensive Care Unit is a 14 bed general Intensive Care Unit that admits approximately 850 patients per annum. A teaching program designed for trainees in Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, and Emergency Medicine is provided. The unit also has an active research program in which trainees are encouraged to participate. The Unit is approved for core training by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.

The department has the following positions are available in 2011:

ICU/Anaesthetics  Registrar - 2 x positions (each would involve 6 months Anaesthetics and 6 month Intensive Care Unit
                                                      placements).  These positions will suit those ICU trainees seeking 12 months Anaesthetics

Nephrology
Description

The Department of Nephrology is a busy and growing subspecialty unit of Western Health.  It is a Level 3 Hub (autonomous) dialysis provider, ensuring an integrated service for all patients in the western suburbs with acute and chronic kidney disease.  Acute Transplant care is co-ordinated with Melbourne Health, and transplant workup and post Transplant care is offered at Western Health.  Additional services include an inpatient and outpatient service in Obstetric Medicine based at the Sunshine Hospital campus.

Oncology
Description

The Oncology Unit at Western Health is situated in the Centre for Oncology and Gastroenterology.  It is staffed by 9 VMO Oncologists, 3 Registrars and 2 HMOs.  One Registrar is a Basic Physician Trainee rotating through the Service and the other two are Advanced Trainees who spend 12 months in the Unit. 
An additional position also exists and this is a rotational arrangement between Western Health and Bendigo Health Services - the successful applicants will spend 2 x 6 month rotations at each location. 
The applicants will be working with the Professor of Oncology, Professor Michael Green within a Centre that has a comprehensive service dealing with solid tumours and gastroenterology.

Rehabilitation
Description

The Rehabilitation Unit at Sunshine specialises in Neurological and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation with some General Rehabilitation.  Registrars will have the opportunity to work in a mutually supportive team environment with easy access to wide range of investigations within the same campus. Varied duties include general medical care, assessment of referrals from acute facilities and attendance at the combined Rehabilitation/Aged Care/Neurology meeting held at the Footscray campus.  The Rehabilitation Team comprises 2 Consultants, HMO, Allied Health professionals and Pharmacy Services.  Strong affiliation with colleagues at Melbourne and Northern Health.  Many opportunities for teaching and education exist for this position.

Respiratory and Sleep Disorders
Description

The Department is a very busy subspecialty Unit of Western Health that performs clinical, research and teaching within the organisation. At a clinical level the Department admits approximately 1300 inpatients per annum and manages a 5 bed non-invasive ventilation unit. In addition there are significant numbers of inpatient consultations and the Department runs General Respiratory Outpatient clinic, Sleep Disorders Outpatient clinic and Migrant Screening Outpatient clinics.   The Sleep Disorders Unit performs approximately 1900 sleep studies per annum and these include both in laboratory and in the home studies. The Respiratory Function Laboratory performs a complete range of tests. Research opportunities in sleep and general respiratory medicine abound within the department. The department is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical/Allied health education.
