Aged Care
Description

The Department of Aged Care is a busy subspecialty unit of Western Health admitting a large number of inpatients a year.

Cardiology
Description

The Western Health Cardiology Unit is serviced by 16 VMO Cardiologists, 4 Registrars and 4 HMOs.  The Registrars comprise 1 Accredited Advanced Trainee position and 2 Hospital Appointed positions suitable for an elective year for an Advanced Trainee or a General Physician Trainee. The fourth registrar is a basic physician trainee from the General Pool.

Endocrinology
Description

The Department of Endocrinology is a busy subspecialty unit of Western Health serving 6,000 outpatients per year and also having inpatients and a busy Consultation service at both Footscray and Sunshine campuses. 
The Department has the following positions available in 2009.

Registrar Endocrinology Advanced Trainee - 1x position available required clinical year (RCY) training position,

Gastroenterology
Description

The Gastroenterology Unit is part of the Centre of Oncology and Gastroenterology Service (COGS).  The Unit is staffed by 2 Registrars, one of whom is a senior trainee - this position would suit a candidate near the end of their training who wishes to get experience in scope work.  The position is suitable for an Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology.

Infectious Diseases
Description

The Infectious Diseases Unit provides an excellent clinical experience under the supervsion of 3 supportive full time Staff Physicians.  This includes inpatient care, an extensive consultation service, outpatients (Tuberculosis, Hepatitis and general Infectious Disease), Infection Control, Hospital in the Home, and an antibiotic stewardship program.  You will gain knowledge in the management of adult community-acquired, nosocomial, mycobacterial, tropical and retroviral infections in particular.  There is a major commitment to teaching of students and basic trainees and active encouragement to participate in clinical meetings.

Intensive Care
Description The Western Health Intensive Care Unit is a 14 bed general Intensive Care Unit that admits approximately 850 patients per annum. A teaching program designed for trainees in Intensive Care, Anaesthesia, and Emergency Medicine is provided. The unit also has an active research program in which trainees are encouraged to participate. The Unit is approved for core training by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
The department has the following positions are available in 2009:

ICU/Anaesthetics Registrar - 2 x positions (each would involve 6 months Anaesthetics and 6 month Intensive Care Unit
                                                      placements).  These positions will suit those ICU trainees seeking 12 months Anaesthetics
                                                      and 12 months ICU over a 2 year period.

Intensive Care Unit Registrar - 1 x position (this position suits a trainee seeking 12 months ICU experience.

Nephrology
Description

The Department of Nephrology is a busy and growing subspecialty unit of Western Health.  It has recently become a Level 3 Hub (autonomous) dialysis provider, which will ensure an integrated service for all patients in the western suburbs with acute and chronic kidney disease.  In the future, it is expected to provide care for patients following transplantation.  Additional servies include an inpatient and outpatient service in obstetric medicine based at the Sunshine Hospital campus.

Oncology
Description

The Oncology Unit at Western Health is situated in the Centre for Oncology and Gastroenterology.  It is staffed by 9 VMO Oncologists, 3 Registrars and 2 HMOs.  One Registrar is a Basic Physician Trainee rotating through the Service and the other two are Advanced Trainees who spend 12 months in the Unit.  The applicants will be working with the Professor of Oncology, Professor Michael Green within a Centre that has a comprehensive service dealing with solid tumours and gastroenterology.

Rehabilitation
Description

The Rehabilitation Unit at Sunshine specialises in Neurological and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation with some General Rehabilitation.  Registrars will have the opportunity to work in a mutually supportive team environment with easy access to wide range of investigations within the same campus. Varied duties include general medical care, assessment of referrals from acute facilities and attendance at Neurology Rehab Clinic at Sunshine.  The Rehabilitation Team comprises 2 Consultants, HMO, Allied Health professionals and Pharmacy Services.  Strong affiliation with colleagues at Melbourne and Northern Health.  Many opportunities for teaching and education.

Respiratory and Sleep Disorders
Description

The Department is a very busy subspecialty Unit of Western Health that performs clinical, research and teaching within the organisation. At a clinical level the Department admits approximately 1300 inpatients per annum and manages a 5 bed non-invasive ventilation unit. In addition there are significant numbers of inpatient consultations and the Department runs General Respiratory Outpatient clinic, Sleep Disorders Outpatient clinic, Migrant Screening Outpatient clinics and is involved with the Obesity Service. The Sleep Disorders Unit performs approximately 1900 sleep studies per annum and these include both in laboratory and in the home studies. The Respiratory Function Laboratory performs a complete range of tests. Research opportunities in sleep and general respiratory medicine abound within the department. The department is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical/Allied health education.

Fellow:  - 1 x position is available for a Fellow to help manage the Migrant Screening outpatient clinics and perform research
                  into aspects of cardiovascular and sleep disorders interactions.
