Description |
The Addiction Medicine Service (Western Health) provides comprehensive medical care for patients with a wide range of drug related disorders and receives referrals statewide. This full time position offers accredited training in Addiction Medicine for those who are interested in attaining the RAChAM. For those who complete their first part FRACP, it can be combined with a period of advanced medical training to acheive a combined FRACP/FAChAM. For those undertaking psychiatry training, advanced training in psychiatry can be combined with a period of addiction training to achieve a combined FRANZCP/FAChAM. This position can also provide accredited training for those undertaking training in Emergency Medicine, General Medicine and General Practice. | Description |
The Geriatric Medicine program provides acute and sub acute care across all three campuses incorporating inpatient, outpatient and consultative services. The program is only responsible for inpatient care however operates with a close interface with the Directorate of Community Integration and Allied Health for specialty community based services. The Department of Aged Care is a busy subspecialty unit of Western Health admitting a large number of inpatients a year.

| Description |
The Centre for Cardiovascular Therapeutics (CCVT) provides a range of services targeted at the diagnosis, intervention and treatment of patients who are affected by cardiovascular disease. CCVT consists of inpatient and outpatient services, inpatient services being provided predominantly at Western Hospital. Outpatient services are provided at Western Hospital and Sunshine Hospital through privatised clinics and in addition, public outpatient services at Western Hospital. The Western Health Cardiology Unit is serviced by 16 VMO Cardiologists, 4 Registrars and 4 HMOs. The Registrars comprise of 3 Accredited Advanced Trainee positions and the 4th is a basic physician trainee (BPT3) from the General Pool. |

| Description |
The Gastroenterology Unit is part of the Centre of Oncology and Gastroenterology Service (COGS). The Unit is staffed by 3 Registrars, one of whom is a Fellow - this position would suit a candidate near the end of their training who wishes to get advanced training in endoscopy or hepatology. The position is suitable for a non core year for an Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology. There is the possibility of Department of Health and Ageing (DOHA) Funding being granted as part of the Specialist Training Program for an additional Gastroenterology Registrar (Advanced Trainee) as part of the Sunbury Day Hospital medical workforce. The confirmation of the additional funding will not be made until later in the year at this time. |

| Description |
The General Internal Medicine Unit is across the tow (2) campuses - Western and Sunshine. Western Hospital, Footscray admits about 2,400 patients a year, has two outpatient clinics a week and Sunshine Hospital admits over 2,200 patients a year, has a formal relationship with the Obstetric Medicine Service and Outpatients clinic. CoOrdinated Advanced Training Program in General Medicine Supported by Victorian Department of Health Applications are invited for 6 positions - 2 positions to be provided at each site across the 3 health care networks - for 1-3 years of advanced training in General Medicine Successful applicants will be provided with experience necessary to satisfy RACP advanced training rquirements in General Medicine with opportunities for rotations which may include: Acute Medicine Unit Applicants for >1 year of training will have the opportunity to arrange rotations in their 2nd/3rd Year of training that compliment those already gained. Applicants who have completed core training in another subspecialty will be provided with 12 months of General Medical Training with the possibility of an additional 12 months as a junior consultant post-fellowship in order to achieve the highly regarded dual training in General Medicine and other subspecialty. | Haematology | |
| Description |
The Haematology and Oncology Unit is a busy and growing subspecialty unit of Western Health. Cancer services have been recognised as an area of need for the growing population of Western Melbourne. In particular, Haematology is growing rapidly at Western Health, with the recent addition of two (2) new Consultants. The major focus of Haematology at Western Health is the diagnosis and treatment of patients with all haematological disorders apart from aggressive lymphomas and leukaemias requiring intense inpatient chemotherapy. A large component is the consultative service to the Medical, Surgical and Obstetric Units.
The accredited core clinical year training position in Haematology provides clinical experience in the assessment, investigation and management of adults with haematological disorders. The trainee will participate in the provision of outpatient and inpatient haematology care at the Western Hospital and some outpatient obstetric medicine at Sunshine Hospital. The trainee will also have the opportunity to participate in a short clinical research project at Western Hospital, Footscray as well as involvement in the growing clinical research programme. There will be exposure to some Laboratory Haematology medicine. | Infectious Diseases | |
| Description |
The Infection Control team works to minimise the transmission of infections within the Western Health hospital setting. Western Health has specialist nurses on each campus that monitor for infection within the hospital and supports the clinical staff with education and advice. The nurses in collaboration with the ID consultants and registrar, advise on how to safely care for those patients that may be infectious to others, and help to keep our network environment as safe as possible for all patients, staff and visitors. The Infection Control team also collect and compile information related to hygiene and general preventative measures. This information is examined carefully by the Infection Control Committee, which meets regularly, to help ensure that the highest standards of infection control are provided within Western Health. The committee is comprised of nurses, doctors, pharmacists and others from across the health service. The department has the following positions available in 2012:

The Western Health Intensive Care Unit is a 14 bed general Intensive Care Unit that admits approximately 1,000 patients per annum. The unit also has an active research program in which trainees are encouraged to participate. The Unit is approved for core training by the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. The Department of Nephrology is a busy and growing subspecialty unit of Western Health. It is a Level 3 Hub (autonomous) dialysis provider, ensuring an integrated service for all patients in the western suburbs with acute and chronic kidney disease. Acute Transplant care is co-ordinated with Melbourne Health, and transplant workup and post Transplant care is offered at Western Health. | Description |
The Department of Neurology has both General Neurology and Stroke Service beds located on one floor of the hospital (Ward 2C). The Department regularly occupies between 30 and 35 beds in the hospital and admits approximately 600 stroke patients and 500 general neurology patients per year.
The Department also utilizes the Day Hospital Facility of the hospital for one-day admission diagnostic workup and treatments. The Department provides a consultant service to all three hospitals and runs a weekly General Neurology and Stroke clinic.The Department provides a neurophysiology service to the network with EEG, NCVs/EMG and evoked responses. The department participates in Stroke treatment trials and is looking to expand this activity. It also has a special interest in the pathogenesis and management of neuropathic pain. There is a weekly clinical meeting, incorporating imaging, clinical presentations and invited speakers and a weekly clinical meeting held in conjunction with the Neurology Department at the Royal Melbourne Hospital where the trainee and fellow regularly present cases worked up on the western service. Presentations are made to the Network Grand rounds approximately twice per year. The Department provides a busy clinical training environment enabling the trainee to develop a clinical skill base that few services in the country can match, and is an ideal learning environment for junior medical staff who rotate through the service. | Description |
Cancer Services provides acute inpatient care specialist same day Oncology, Palliative Care Consultation and inpatient Palliative Care services across all three campuses. The activity profile is approximately 5.4% of total activity for Western Health.
Services included in this program are: Medical Oncology Service Day Oncology Service (WH), Palliative Care Consultation Service (All Campuses) Oncology Hospital in the Home (home based), Palliative Care Outreach (home based), Inpatient Palliative Care Service (SH). It is staffed by 9 VMO Oncologists, 3 Registrars, 1 Oncology Research Fellow and 3 HMOs. One Registrar and one HMO belongs to the Greater Western Consortium as Basic Physician Trainees rotating through the Service. The other two (2) are Advanced Trainees who spend 12 months in the Unit. The applicants will be working with the Professor of Oncology, Professor Michael Green within a Centre that has a comprehensive service dealing with solid tumours and gastroenterology. | Description |
Western Health is supporting growth and development of the subacute care portfolio to better meet the needs of older people and people with complex care needs. The Rehabilitation Service currently has 24 beds at the Sunshine Hospital campus and a new service at the Western Hospital Footscray campus. The new 20 bed subacute unit was established on the Footscray campus in February 2011 providing care to people requiring rehabilitation (10 beds) and geriatric evaluation and management (10 beds), increasing the number of rehabilitation beds to 34 across Western Health. It is expected that the service will continue to expand in 2012. The Rehabilitation Service specialises in Neurological and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation with some General Rehabilitation. Registrars will have the opportunity to work in a mutually supportive team environment with easy access to wide range of investigations. Varied duties include general medical care, assessment of referrals from acute facilities and attendance at the combined Rehabilitation/Aged Care/Neurology meeting held at the Footscray campus. You will join a team of three Rehabilitation Physicians supported by a strong multidisciplinary team. | Description |
The Department is a very busy subspecialty Unit of Western Health that performs clinical, research and teaching within the organisation. At a clinical level the Department admits approximately 1300 inpatients per annum and manages a 5 bed non-invasive ventilation unit. In addition there are significant numbers of inpatient consultations and the Department runs General Respiratory Outpatient clinic, Sleep Disorders Outpatient clinic and Migrant Screening Outpatient clinics. The Sleep Disorders Unit performs approximately 1900 sleep studies per annum and these include both in laboratory and in the home studies. The Respiratory Function Laboratory performs a complete range of tests. There are opportunities to participate / undertake research opportunities in sleep and general respiratory medicine abound within the department. The department is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical/Allied health education.
