Spotlight on research

Research comes under the spotlight from 22 to 26 October as we host an impressive line-up of keynote speakers and showcase research across Western Health and our partner institutions – among them nationally and internationally recognised achievements.

All staff and external partners are encouraged to attend.

In opening Research Week 2018 at the Western Centre for Health Research and Education, Professor Andrew Roberts will discuss what partnerships in cancer research are delivering for our patients.

Other keynote speakers include:

  • Associate Professor Debra Waters on “Lifestyle Interventions for Frail Obese Older Adults.”

  • Associate Professor Cathy Said on “From clinician to researcher: how I ‘fell’ into research.”

  • Professor Graeme Maguire on “Indigenous health, disadvantage and vulnerability – what we can learn to inform health care delivery.”

  • Associate Professor Douglas E. Crompton on “The Epilepsies.”

  • Professor Sheila Crewther on “Systems Neuroscience Approach to Stroke Care 2020.”

  • Associate Professor Girish Nair on “Stem Cell Therapy in Parkinson Disease.”

  • Professor Julie Considine on “Clinical deterioration in the emergency department: why it matters both in the ED and on the wards.”

  • Professor Philip Peyton on “Trials and Tribulations.”

  • Professor Peter Gibbs on “Registry Trials.”

The top posters from early career investigators will feature in a special session after the opening. Research Week sponsored prizes will again be awarded across a number of categories for research excellence.

Professor Edward Janus, Director of Research at Western Health, said: “This year over 100 research abstracts were submitted and we also saw an increase in the number and quality of Western Health research grant applications.”

“The criteria for these awards combine two key requirements: high standard applications and alignment with our strategic research direction. This presents a very competitive field and makes judging a challenging task.”

In talking about research at Western Health, Prof Janus said: “We are well on the way to becoming a strong research centre, and have experienced an exponential growth in our activities. In particular we are participating in more clinical trials, some of which have been initiated by our own researchers. We are also taking our research out into the local community through collaborative projects.”

“This work will ultimately improve patient care and deliver better outcomes for our patients and the communities of the West.”

We thank our keynote speakers, researchers and our generous Research Week 2018 sponsors who contributed toward the research prizes.

Our major sponsor of Research Week 2018 is Medtronic, with sponsors TLC Aged Care, Dorevitch Pathology, Western Health Foundation, Rotary Club of Footscray, Canon and Western Anaesthesia and Western Care Group.
